This condition may be experienced by both genders as a result of dramatic weight loss. It may also be caused by naturally inherited traits or changes in health. Pregnancy is another common cause of excess abdominal skin and fat. As a result, a tummy tuck is typically included as a part of the mommy makeover or body lift procedures
Best Candidates
If you find your weight is frequently fluctuating due to diet, exercise or health conditions, a tummy tuck may not be your best solution for eliminated flab and defining your abdominal shape. The most effective results are achieved for patients with a stable weight who need to eliminate excess skin or fatty tissue, typically following sustainable weight loss.
A tummy tuck is often recommended following liposuction to help maintain a natural and taut look for the abdomen following the removal of excess fat in the torso region. It can also help women who have recently given birth to restore their shape after losing the baby weight.
What is involved?
Before your procedure, general anesthetic is administered to ensure that you are comfortable during surgery. A horizontal incision is made just below the bathing suit line above the pubic area. A second incision may be made around the navel to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen.
Loose tissue and muscle underneath the skin is tightened with internal sutures. Skin is tightened and pulled downward. Any excess skin is removed, and a new hole is made for the navel. The navel is poked through the skin, keeping its original location. The incisions are then closed to finish the procedure.
Recovering
Dressings and bandages are applied immediately following a tummy tuck to prevent infection and control swelling. Compression garments may also be applied to prevent swelling and keep the tissue in its new position. Surgical drains are sometimes used to allow the removal of fluid buildup following the procedure.
Stitches are generally removed within two weeks, during which time swelling will decrease as well. Patients may return to normal routines and sexual activity after about two weeks. Full recovery takes 5-8 weeks. Of course, recovery times may vary depending on the extent of the procedure.
Common questions about the tummy tuck procedure
Will there be scarring following?
It is always a top priority to minimize or eliminate visible scarring following cosmetic surgery. Lower tummy tuck incisions are hidden below the swimsuit line whenever possible. Upper abdominal incisions can be hidden in the natural folds of the navel. Incisions are also closed with fine sutures to reduce the appearance of scarring. Visible scarring should fade over a period of up to 12 months.
How will I feel after the procedure?
The sensitive location of the tummy tuck procedure may contribute to a range of discomfort. This may be due to swelling and tissue adjustment. Discomfort may be treated through the use of prescription medication and supportive garments, and will subside as the swelling goes down.
Are there any possible complications?
As with any surgery, there are possible complications following a tummy tuck. These may include asymmetric or irregular surface appearance. And whenever surgery is performed, there may be a chance of infection, sensitivity changes and fluid buildup. Dr. Mosiello will speak with you about all possible complications during the initial consultation, and how he can help to remedy any unexpected results.
