Breast Lift Incision Types
The incision pattern depends on how much lift you need. For a smaller lift, the incision may go only around the areola. A common pattern goes around the areola and straight down to the breast crease (often called a lollipop or vertical lift). When more skin needs to be removed, a third incision may be added along the breast crease (an anchor pattern). Dr. Mosiello will explain which approach fits your anatomy.

What are the steps of breast lift surgery?
Breast lift surgery is a highly personalized procedure that will vary depending on your individual situation. The general technique involves the use of general anesthesia. Incisions are typically made around the areola and extend downward in a vertical line towards the breast crease. A third incision may be made underneath the breast crease.
Following the incision, Dr. Mosiello will gently lift, reshape and tighten the underlying breast tissue. Additional incisions may be necessary to remove excess skin. The areola and nipple will also be moved to a higher position and anchored in place. If necessary, the areola may be reduced in size. The tissue will then be secured in place and incisions will be sutured.
How long is recovery following the procedure?
Just after the procedure, a dressing or compression garment may be used to minimize swelling or bruising and protect the new position of the breasts. Draining tubes may also be inserted into the wounds to help drain the natural buildup of fluids. Stitches will be removed in increments and you may be required to wear a support bra for several weeks. The results of surgery should be immediately apparent, though swelling may obscure the final appearance for a few months. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for a minimum of 1-2 weeks.
Is there scarring from a breast lift?
Although there will be permanent scarring following surgery, incisions are designed to be hidden by most clothing. Incision lines will gradually begin to fade and flatten over the course of several months.
How will I feel after the breast lift procedure?
Swelling may contribute to some tightness and discomfort following surgery. Prescription medications may be given to help manage this pain for the first few days, and a support bra may be worn for the first few weeks. Special pillows may also be used for nighttime support.
What are the risks of breast lift surgery?
Breast lift surgery has a low risk of complications, which may include asymmetry, pain, discomfort, and an irregular appearance. As with all surgical procedures, there is also the risk of bleeding, poor wound healing, or infection. Revisionary surgery may be necessary to correct some complications.
