What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as “man boobs,” is a condition in which men develop enlarged breasts that are larger than what is considered normal. While older men and teenagers are more prone to this condition, it can affect men of any age group.
While gynecomastia usually doesn’t cause pain, in some cases it can be uncomfortable, and the severity of the condition can range from a small amount of breast tissue to noticeable bulging.
Hormonal imbalances, older age, obesity, and certain medications are among the factors that can contribute to the development of gynecomastia in men.
An imbalance between hormones can lead to the development of “man boobs.” Although losing weight can sometimes help reduce the size of a man’s breasts, it is not guaranteed to affect gynecomastia.
Why Choose Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia can cause both psychological and physical issues in men. Excess breast tissue can make you feel ‘self-conscious’ when shopping for new clothes or undressing in a public area such as the gym or swimming pool, making you feel embarrassed, which may impact your confidence and personal relationships.
If your breasts are caused or enhanced by being obese, it is always advised to try and lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle first. Not only can this potentially reduce the size of the breasts but will contribute to good overall health in the future.
Speaking with a consultant who is an expert in this field will help you identify your condition and confirm that you have gynecomastia and not just excess breast fat.
Gynecomastia Surgery is an option to treat enlarged male breasts.
About The Procedure
Gynecomastia surgery for men is carried out under general anesthetic.
The surgery is performed with a combination of breast tissue excision and liposuction of excess fat, depending on the severity of the gynecomastia. An incision can be made around the nipple and areola for breast tissue excision and excess fat cells are removed using liposuction.
If the gynecomastia is severe, repositioning of the nipple may be required in one or both breasts.
On average, the procedure takes around 2 hours to complete, and is performed in an outpatient surgery center.
Recovery
Recovery from gynecomastia is a gradual process. For some men that undergoing gynecomastia surgery, they find that it takes up to 3-6 months to completely recover.
However, it is advised that a few days off work immediately after surgery are best to be taken so that your body is given the best chance to recover without complications.
Patients are provided with an elastic or compression garment that is to be worn throughout the day and night for 6 to 8 weeks post-surgery.
As this procedure requires incisions, which are typically stitched with dissolvable sutures, bandage changes will be necessary and scar management will be recommended to optimize results.
It is very important to understand and follow the advice that your surgeon will provide regarding recovery. Patients should avoid exercise, stretching and lifting heavy objects for up to 2 months after undergoing treatment.
If pain or discomfort is experienced when you put on a seatbelt, you may have to wait for a few days for it to subside before getting behind the wheel.
Results
Swelling will occur from this procedure, and the reduction in the size of the breast can take up to 6 months to see the full results.

Complications

Patients may experience soreness in the treated area for a few weeks after the procedure, but this is normal and not typically a cause for concern.
Scaring is also common where incisions are made during the surgery, but the scars are small and will fade over time. There may be a scar around the nipple and areola or horizontally and/or vertically across the crease of the breast, depending on the size of the breasts and the treatment required. We will work with you to minimize any potential risks and ensure that your recovery is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Additional risks will be based on the specific procedure a patient requires but may include change or loss of sensation in the nipple, healing issues, asymmetry, uneven contour, infection, bleeding, and thick or raised scars.
