What Breast Implants Are Made Of
Did you know that not all breast implants are made of the same materials? In fact there are several different types of breast implants that are commonly used in breast augmentation today. The three most common descriptors are silicone implants, saline implants, and gummy bear implants. Here is what you need to know about the materials used.
Silicone
Even though some breast implants are filled with saline, all breast implants have a silicone outer shell. This outer shell might be textured or smooth. It may be round or teardrop shaped. There are many different options, but all of them will contain some amount of silicone. Silicone is completely safe in the body, and the first silicone breast implants were approved by the FDA in the 1960s.
Silicone Gel
Many breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The silicone gel is usually of average consistency, although gummy bear implants will have a much thicker gel. Silicone implants come in different shapes and sizes, and they can’t be adjusted after manufactured.
Saline
Saline was FDA approved for use in breast implants in the 1990s. Saline implants are often considered safer because if a leak occurs, the saline is harmless; while the silicone gel could cause complications. Saline is basically just salt water, so there is absolutely no danger if it is punctured.
