The surgical thigh lift is an excellent way to tighten the skin and reduce sagging in the inner and outer thigh. It is often performed in conjunction with other procedures. It is also used in cases where liposuction alone is not enough to improve the appearance of the thighs.
The thigh lift procedure is often performed following significant weight loss. This may occur as a result of lifestyle change, gastric surgery or pregnancy. Patients may be advised to wait until they have finished having children before undergoing this procedure. The thigh lift is often performed in conjunction with other procedures. These may include a buttocks lift, tummy tuck, mommy makeover or lower body lift.
When to Consider a Thigh Lift
Ideal thigh lift candidates are healthy and have already tried diet and exercise to tone their thighs. A thigh lift may be able to:
- Tighten thigh skin
- Improve muscle tone
- Reduce sagging
- Improve overall appearance
- Correct imbalances
Not smoking may greatly improve your recovery following a thigh lift. Other considerations may be determined by talking through your medical history with Dr. Mosiello.
FAQ
What are the steps?
The thigh lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia or twilight anesthesia. The pubic area is shaved prior to surgery to help avoid infection. An incision is made along the groin crease in order to reduce visible scarring.
Excess fat, tissue and skin are removed and the skin is tightened through upward stretching. The tissue is secured in place internally to minimize stress on the external sutures. These external sutures are then put in place to close the incision.
What is recovery like following the procedure?
The area is quickly bandaged to help improve healing. A tube may be placed to help drain fluid buildup over the next few days. A compression garment may help minimize swelling and keep the tissues in place. Swelling and bruising may increase for the first few days. They should recede over the next few weeks.
As swelling goes down, the results of the surgery may be seen clearly. Often bed rest is recommended for the first 7-10 days. After this time, the stitches may be removed and some activity resumed. Individual results vary, but typically the recovery takes 2-5 weeks.
Will there be scarring?
The thigh lift incision is carefully positioned within the groin line to be minimally noticeable. Fine sutures are utilized so the final scar may be as small as possible. The incision lines should continue to lighten for 6-12 months.
How will I feel after the procedure?
The sensitive nature of the groin may contribute to some discomfort and pain. Discomfort may also be caused by the swelling surrounding the incisions. Compression garments and prescription medications may effectively help manage this condition.
Are there any possible complications?
There may be complications following a thigh lift such as asymmetric healing or surface irregularities. Other complications that may occur include infection, change in sensitivity, and bleeding. Dr. Mosiello will walk you through all possible complications in your consultation.
