The first silicone breast implants were developed in 1961, and the first breast augmentation surgery was done in 1962. The procedure did not become popular right away. Initially, there were many complications, especially with capsular contracture, a condition in which scar tissue constricts around the implant making it feel firm.
The early implants had many challenges and there was conflicting evidence about the safety of silicone implants; therefore, breast augmentation didn’t really become popular until the late 90’s. However, every year more and more women have been getting breast implants. In fact, in 2018 alone over a quarter million breast augmentation surgeries were done in the United States. Breast augmentation is now the second most popular cosmetic surgical treatment.
Current Breast Enlargement Trends
With the invention of the “gummy bear” implant, silicone implants have increased the popularity of breast augmentation in the last five years. Saline implants are still available as well, and the perfect choice for women under 22 years of age. In the past women tended to get very large implants, however, desired breast size has slowly gotten smaller. Current trends indicate that many women are seeking full B-cups or C-cups, rather than the previously popular size D or DD.
