Choose a Plastic (Not Cosmetic) Surgeon for Your Breast Surgery
If you’re seeking out a surgeon to complete a cosmetic breast procedure, finding a qualified, experienced medical professional is crucial. There’s a common misconception, often fueled by misleading advertising, that board-certified plastic surgeons and board-certified cosmetic surgeons are the same. This isn’t the case! The training and continuing education required of cosmetic surgeons and board-certified plastic surgeons are distinct. For your breast surgery, choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mosiello is your best option for results that align with your goals.
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Vs. Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeon
The American Board of Medical Specialties
The American Board of Medical Specialties, or ABMS, includes 24 physician specialties. To become certified in a specialty recognized by this board, doctors must complete a residency training program in their specialty lasting at least two years after their internship. While the American Board of Plastic Surgery is included within the 24 specialties of the ABMS, there is no specialty dedicated to cosmetic surgery. This leads to less regulation in training to become a cosmetic surgeon, as opposed to a plastic surgeon. Board-certified cosmetic surgeons often don’t fulfill the training requirements of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Breast augmentation is a popular procedure that often isn’t covered in the training that board-certified cosmetic surgeons receive. For your health, safety, and the final look of the breasts, you’ll need a surgeon that’s thoroughly trained in breast procedures including breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and breast implant removal. This isn’t guaranteed with board-certified cosmetic surgeons.
