A pilonidal cyst is an abnormality that occurs at the base of the back. It is thought that the cyst develops from ingrown hairs in this area, and as such occurs more commonly in younger men but can also occur in women. The cyst can, on occasion, become infected and fill with pus, causing redness and swelling at the base of the back. If left untreated the cyst enlarges, causing discomfort and/or pain. Drainage from the cyst may result in constant soilage of the undergarments, which can be a source of embarrassment. The preferred treatment for a pilonidal cyst is surgical excision of the cyst. Oftentimes, however, surgeons with less experience do not remove the cyst in its entirety, resulting in recurring infections of this area.
Dr. Mosiello in collaboration with Dr. Alan Chudzinski can provide patients a successful surgical remedy for this often-debilitating condition.
Dr. Chudzinski, a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon is highly experienced with issues plaguing those who suffer from pilonidal cysts. Dr. Chudzinski offers surgical treatment for the affected skin area and Dr Mosiello, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, performs the subsequent skin flap closure to ensure optimal cosmetic outcome.
The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia at Advent Health Tampa. Dr. Mosiello uses advanced plastic surgical techniques to close the wound, after the pilonidal cyst and tracts are removed.
You will have specialized dressings to minimize infection and promote wound healing as well as surgical drains which may remain in place for several weeks. Patient compliance with post-operative guidelines is critical to maximize healing. Sitting will be limited and gradual resumption of activity will progress over several weeks. You may be asked to refrain from exercise or vigorous activities until complete healing has occurred. The surgery can provide extreme physical and psychological benefits for those suffering from this chronic, debilitating disease.
Many patients also receive laser hair removal services to assist in optimizing their outcomes. Mary Beth Lambert, CCE, CME of Laser Affair conveniently shares office space with Dr. Mosiello and offers compassionate care to these patients.
