Breast Reduction for Men
Breast reduction for men is used to treat a medical condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the appearance of feminine breasts. This affects 40-60 percent of the male population to varying degrees.
Disproportionate or imbalanced male breasts may be caused by a number of different reasons. It often cannot be eliminated by diet and exercise. Genetics, estrogen-containing medications, alcohol use, marijuana use, steroid use, cancer, and liver diseases may all cause gynecomastia in one or both breasts.
When to Consider Breast Reduction for Men
Breast Reduction for Men is considered for healthy men that have tried exercise and diet adjustments with no success. Firm, elastic skin will help ensure a successful procedure. Benefits of male breast reduction may include:
- Decreased breast size
- Sleeker chest profile
- Increased comfort and fit of clothing
- Improved self-confidence
If you smoke, not smoking prior to the procedure may improve your healing. Dr. Mosiello will discuss this and other factors with you during the consultation.
FAQ
What are the steps of the breast reduction for men procedure?
General anesthetic or intravenous sedation may be used to ensure patient comfort. Typically, the incisions are located around the nipple. Liposuction may be used to remove any excess fat deposits using a thin plastic suction tube. Excess glandular tissue may be cut out through the incision, and excess skin removed. The incisions are closed with fine sutures for minimal scarring.
What is recovery like following the procedure?
A bandage will be immediately applied to the treatment area. A compression garment may be given to reduce swelling and bruising. This may need to be worn for 3-6 weeks.
In some cases, swelling may obscure the results initially. Over the next few weeks, the adjustments should become clear. Stitches may be removed after a week, at which time normal activities can be resumed. The area should be protected from sun and impact for up to six months.
Will there be scarring from a male breast reduction?
There may be some slight scarring around the nipple. The visibility of this scarring is different for each patient. In some cases, it may be hidden in the contours of the areola. Internal support and very fine external sutures help minimize the appearance of incision lines. These lines should continue to fade for up to one year.
How will I feel after the procedure?
There may be some pain or discomfort following the procedure. This is a result of swelling in the treatment area. This discomfort may be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications. It should lessen after the first few days.
Are there any possible complications?
Complications may include numbness, fluid buildup, pigment changes, or asymmetry. As in other surgeries, there is a chance of infection, poor wound healing, and bleeding. Dr. Mosiello will fully discuss potential complications with you during your consultation.
