Breast implant removal is a surgery that is done for a variety of reasons. Some women who have breast implants decide to have breast implant removal surgery later in life because their body goals have changed. They may now desire a more natural look. Other women may choose to have their existing implants switched out for a different type or size. Still, other women may require their implants to be removed due to deflation or rupture. What To Expect During The Procedure

For breast implant removal surgery, patients receive general anesthesia. You can expect the procedure to take between one and three hours. Your plastic surgeon may place the incision in the same place as it was during the initial breast implant surgeon. However, a new incision location may be required in some cases. 

Many patients may choose to have a breast lift at the same time as breast implant removal. In this case, the plastic surgeon will also tighten the breast tissue and remove excess breast skin. Other patients may decide to take a “wait and see” approach to any additional surgery. Once they’ve adjusted to their new look, they may or may not need to do anything more to the breasts.  

What To Expect After The Procedure

Many patients who are simply having implants removed for a “natural” look have an easier, faster recovery process after breast implant removal when compared to the initial breast augmentation. They often return to work just a few days after the surgery. The breasts may look deflated right after the procedure but will shape out within a few weeks. 

The healing process after breast implant removal spans several months. Patients experience a little discomfort but must stop intense physical activity and heavy lifting for eight weeks following the procedure. Additionally, scarring from breast implant removal typically heals well and fades over time, leaving no obvious sign of the surgery.
