Sometimes, after undergoing breast augmentation surgery, women experience implant displacement. This means that the implants have shifted to a new position, causing an abnormal appearance of the breasts.
Breast implant displacement does not refer to the normal settling of the implants after breast augmentation, which can take a few months. Instead, it may be caused by capsular contracture, overly large breast implants, surgical technique, or simply anatomical anomalies that were present before augmentation surgery.
Here, we’ll discuss some types of breast implant displacement that may be corrected with revision surgery done by Dr. Mosiello of Tampa Palms Plastic Surgery.
Types of Breast Implant Displacement
Different types of breast implant displacement that can occur after breast augmentation include:
- Bottoming out
Bottoming out occurs when a breast implant falls below the inframammary crease. This may make the nipple point up and create a bulge in the lower part of the breast. This can be a difficult type of breast implant displacement to identify, as breast implants need to “drop” after breast augmentation. But if you feel that the implant is at the bottom of the breast, schedule an appointment with your plastic surgeon to check.
- High riding
High riding is the opposite of bottoming out and occurs when the implants are placed too high on the breasts. This puts pressure on the breast tissue underneath the implants. Again, given that breast implants seem to ride high for a few months when they’ve just been positioned, this can be tricky to identify. If you have a breast implant that feels and appears to be too high up in the breasts, visit your plastic surgeon.
- Lateral displacement
Lateral displacement occurs when the implant shifts outward, moving in the direction of the armpit. This can create an appearance of breasts that are abnormally far apart.
- Symmastia
Symmastia occurs when the breasts move too close together. This can make the breasts look like a “uni-boob” and may be caused by over dissection during breast augmentation.
